संयुक्त राष्ट्र की महासभा ने 3 मई को विश्व प्रेस दिवस या विश्व प्रेस स्वतंत्रता दिवस घोषित किया, ताकि प्रेस की आजादी के महत्व से दुनिया को आगाह कराया जाए।
इसका एक और मकसद दुनिया भर की सरकारों को यह याद दिलाना है कि अभिव्यक्ति की आजादी के अधिकार की रक्षा और सम्मान करना इसका कर्तव्य है।
लोकतंत्र के मूल्यों की सुरक्षा और उनको बहाल करने में मीडिया अहम भूमिका निभाता है। इसलिए सरकारों को पत्रकारों की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करनी चाहिए।
1991 में अफ्रीका के पत्रकारों ने प्रेस की आजादी के लिए एक पहल की थी। उन्होंने 3 मई को प्रेस की आजादी के सिद्धांतों से संबंधित एक बयान जारी किया था जिसे डिक्लेरेशन ऑफ विंडहोक (Declaration of Windhoek) के नाम से जाना जाता है।
उसकी दूसरी जयंती के अवसर पर 1993 में संयुक्त राष्ट्र की महासभा ने पहली बार विश्व प्रेस स्वतंत्रता दिवस का आयोजन किया।
तब से हर साल 3 मई को यह दिन मनाया जाता है।
